[Geoserver-devel] Remove OL2 from GeoServer

Over the past while, we have been gradually removing OpenLayers 2 from GeoServer.

At this point, the only part of GeoServer left which uses OL2 is the WMS OpenLayers output format, which uses OL3 by default, but can be configured to use OL2 by way setting the ENABLE_OL3 system property or format option to false.

Given that OL2 is old, and generally unsupported, does it make sense to finally remove OL2 from GeoServer?

Torben

Hi Torben,
the only thing that keeps on bugging me about OL3 is that is not as good as a teaching tool for WMS protocol
as OL2 was due to its canvas use.

When doing workshops it was nice and simple to just right click the map in the preview and show people that it
was indeed just an image and its URL was a getmap, now one has to open the developer tools, switch to network,
and show things there, which is one technical step too far away for newbies (in particular those not used to
web development).

That said… oh well, no big deal, sometimes one cannot improve one thing without making others regress, as long
as most people are happy about it I believe we’re good.

Cheers
Andrea

I would be happy for the simplification.

I caution that the GWC UI had some complicated setup where it referenced the geoserver OL2 resources.

Is GWC also migrated off OL2?

Andrea for your teaching story - is it worth making a “copy” link near the top that would put the GetMapRequest on the clipboard?
