[Geoserver-devel] Removing old versions of GeoServer

Hi all,
we are getting reports of broken links on documentation of very old versions of GeoServer:

https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-7786

Wondering, what should we do about it? I see a few options:

  • Remove the availability of docs and downloads from the web site (maybe leaving the artifacts on sourceforge)
  • Just close them as “won’t fix” since the documentation is for a non supported version
    Cheers

+1 to remove.

The download archive on sourceforge should be more than adequate for those with special needs, for example, restoring an ancient installation that cannot be upgraded for some reason. Such unsupported niche activities do not require encouragement.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Per original comment on the ticket, recommend removal (tickets can be WONTFIX
or RESOLVED).

I think that is “fine” the wiki did move, the historic docs still provide value. If we really want we can put a link to http://old.geoserver.org on the http://docs.geoserver.org page.

I wonder if we could do some kind of fancy redirect from:

I believe the trigger for the ticket was that google is making people land
on these pages, which are old and
have broken links. That is of course bad, but there might be other
solutions to this issue (e.g., how do we tell Google not
to index, or to give low importance, to docs of outdated versions?)

I wonder if we could do some kind of fancy redirect from:

* http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/What+is+Geoserver to
http://old.geoserver.org/What%20is%20GeoServer.html ?
* http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/Download to http:
//geoserver.org/download/ ?

Fixing the link won't fix the contents, people will still land on old and
unmantained documentantion. If they are
explicitly searching for it that's not a problem, but if they are landing
there by chance, that's a problem

Cheers
Andrea
