[Geoserver-devel] Reverting a change making our user life difficult with GDAL

Hi,
some days ago Daniele wrote this in an answer to a user problem that seems to be becoming common:

@Torben
I’m wondering if we should restore the old binding as part of the zip archive since Corey is at least the 4th or 5th user falling in this issue.
At the end, the GeoServer GDAL zip is part of a supported extension whilst the gt-ogr-jni store is a geotools plugin being activated with a profile (I didn’t checked so deeply so I might be wrong). In that case, we can update the gt-ogr-jni documentation reporting notes on the potential conflict with the old binding

Here is the thread with full context:
http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/GeoServer-2-11-1-and-GDAL-td5324710.html

I do support Daniele’s suggestion, the GDAL extension is supported, the OGR one is not, and not even packaged
as a community module. Does not make sense to me, to ease life for something that nobody bothers supporting,
if it’s making a supported module harder to use as a side effect.

Cheers
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
I would also add these to the list:

http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/GeoServer-2-11-0-is-not-starting-after-installing-GDAL-plugin-Windows-Tomcat-td5315288.html

https://www.mail-archive.com/geoserver-users@anonymised.comurceforge.net/msg26745.html

(I have also a couple of “private” emails from a colleague and some customers, related to the same problem).
If nobody is against that, It would be great to restore that jar in the release xml.
Do we need some voting?

Cheers,
Daniele

+1 to Daniel suggestion.

Given the issues people have been having, restoring the jar seems like a good idea.

However:
a) We should probably upgrade to a more up-to-date version of the GDAL bindings; probably 1.11.*
b) It would be beneficial if the bindings jar included its GDAL version in its name.

That would be good. However, note that we should rebuild a new set of linux native libs currently available here:
http://demo.geo-solutions.it/share/github/imageio-ext/releases/1.1.X/1.1.16/native/gdal/linux/

(Whilst for windows native builds we can still leverage on this: http://www.gisinternals.com/release.php)

b) It would be beneficial if the bindings jar included its GDAL version in its name.

Actually, it’s already like that (the jar includes the GDAL version):
http://download.osgeo.org/webdav/geotools/it/geosolutions/imageio-ext/imageio-ext-gdal-bindings/1.9.2/imageio-ext-gdal-bindings-1.9.2.jar

Indeed, artifacts like, as an instance, imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.15, imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.16, imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.17, all depend on
imageio-ext-gdal-bindings-1.9.2.jar
where 1.1.x is the imageio-ext version whilst 1.9.2 is the GDAL version.

In reference to point (a), I think we should consider it a separate task, since I’m not sure how long creating new binaries will take (we should also evaluate moving to a 2.x GDAL version).

Cheers,

Hi,
some days ago Daniele wrote this in an answer to a user problem that seems to be becoming common:

@Torben

I can understand that, but if you want to take an informed decision, I wouldn’t consider the GDAL 1.11 series as being still supported by the GDAL project (unless someone particularly well hidden still supports it). 1.11.0 was released more than 3 years ago, and I was kind enough to release a 1.11.5 last July, but given the lack of customer interest for it, I don’t consider doing new point releases for it. Same for 2.0.X

I’m not even sure there will be new point releases in the 2.1 series, after 2.1.4 which is going to be released at the same time as 2.2.1 (*), likely beginning of next week.

(*) ah forgot to mention, the RC is already there:

http://download.osgeo.org/gdal/2.2.1/

Spatialys - Geospatial professional services

http://www.spatialys.com

b) It would be beneficial if the bindings jar included its GDAL version
in its name.

Actually, it's already like that (the jar includes the GDAL version):
http://download.osgeo.org/webdav/geotools/it/geosolutions/imageio-ext/
imageio-ext-gdal-bindings/1.9.2/imageio-ext-gdal-bindings-1.9.2.jar

Indeed, artifacts like, as an instance, imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.15,
imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.16, imageio-ext-gdalarcgrid-1.1.17, all
depend on
imageio-ext-gdal-bindings-1.9.2.jar
where 1.1.x is the imageio-ext version whilst 1.9.2 is the GDAL version.

Ah, my mistake. I remember running into a version of the bindings called

"gdal.jar", but I think that must be what is produced by the regular GDAL
build.

In reference to point (a), I think we should consider it a separate task,
since I'm not sure how long creating new binaries will take (we should also
evaluate moving to a 2.x GDAL version).

I agree that we should consider moving to GDAL 2.x, since that seems to be

what most people are actually using these days, and I think some people
have already had success using it with the current GeoServer.

To be clear: As long as you follow the current install instructions
<GDAL Image Formats — GeoServer 2.27.x User Manual,
the current GDAL module works fine. The bindings are included in the gdal
zip linked
<http://demo.geo-solutions.it/share/github/imageio-ext/releases/1.1.X/1.1.16/native/gdal>
from that page, and the instructions explicitly tell you to copy the
bindings into your WEB-INF/lib.

The main issue is that most users are missing this step in the
instructions, so including the bindings jar with the gs-gdal plugin (as was
done before) would make things a bit easier.

Changing the packaging to include this jar again is relatively trivial, and
can be done independently of upgrading the binding jar.

That said, if someone is using a newer version of GDAL with newer bindings,
including the binding jar by default could cause other conflicts (I would
expect to see issues with GDAL 2.0 and higher).

Given that, if we start including the binding jar again, and don't upgrade
it, we should make this clear in the GDAL install instructions (although
that didn't seem to help much in this case).
