[Geoserver-devel] road map update, Feb 17, 09

Hi all,

A busy IRC meeting with regard to the road map today:

* 1.7.3 release date

Currently 1.7.3 is set to be released next monday on feb 23rd. Unfortunately this date conflicts with the opengeo summit, so our resources to put out the release will be limited. So ideally someone could pick up the reigns and get the release out. However if not I would like to propose we push back the release date by 1 week.

* 1.7.x into bug fixing mode

As feature development winds down on 1.7.x what do people think about putting 1.7.x into bug-fix only mode? The motivation is to focus on 2.x and the features that have been brewing there for probably too long. We will of course still put out regular releases but move feature development to 2.x.

Thoughts?

* Issue update

GEOS-2550, Have the OL map preview list a layer styles:

This issue was brought up from 1.7.4 as Andrea had an itch and could not help scratching it ;).

GEOS-2584, Allow choice of color reduction algorithm for png8 images:

This one was pushed back to 1.7.4 due to resourcing/time constraints.

GEOS-2520, Bring Imageio-ext extension to supported status
GEOS-2296, Add ECW support in the GeoServer downloads:

These issues require an update from Daniele. But have gone without an update the last two or three road map updates. Should they be pushed back? Nothing seems to be changing on them.

Hi Justin,
I apologize for my long silence. I have been absorbed in some funded projects and I had very few time for other tasks :frowning:
Anyway, please read below.

GEOS-2296, Add ECW support in the GeoServer downloads:

About GEOS-2296, the ECW support based on the GDAL plugin mechanism is still available only for windows.
Allowing this on Linux requires some additional work since it isn’t supported on 1.4.4 and actually I’m heavily busy with other funded projects.
Let me know if the Windows 32 download would be sufficient to solve GEOS-2296. In such a context, Also note that our ImageIO-Ext downloads section contains 2 different Windows 32 installers.
Both contains the GDAL_DATA folder (containing CRSs definitions needed by some plugins to properly parse CRSs), JARs and other optional things.
The main difference is this:

  • The first one 1 contains GDAL DLLs with support for Base formats and MrSID + ONLY the ECW Plugin loading DLL. This last DLL will allow the user to enable ECW only once it will obtain the ECW ImageCompression SDK DLLs from the ErMapper Site. (By this way, this installer will not distribute ImageCompression SDK).
  • The second one 2 contains GDAL DLLs with support for Base formats and MrSID + ECW (Both the ECW ImageCompression SDK DLLs and the ECW Plugin loading DLL). If during installation you wish to add ECW Support you the ECW EULA will appear and you will agreed with it to proceed.

I guess 1 could be helpful for your purposes. Could you test it and let us know?

About GEOS-2520, let’s talk about the related Geotools land:

  • I have updated the wiki page of the module (I will move it to plugin instead of unsupported)
  • I have updated the Licenses Investigation wiki page (as reported on the GeoTools ML) on 3 to provide information about the 2 submodules of the imageio-ext [imageio-ext-tiff and imageio-ext-imagereadmt] which have been released as Custom BSD (Being SUN’s JAI-ImageIO derivative work).
  • Builds are available on the imageio-ext site for both Linux 32 (I’m waiting some feedbacks by UDIG’s Guys), and Windows 32. (We have also made Linux 64 bit build but we still need time to deeply test them).
  • I have sent an email on the geotools mailing list about supporting gt-imageio-ext-gdal in the next release.

Regards,
Daniele
