[Geoserver-devel] road map update, Jan 6, 09

Hi all,

Per the new road map process proposal we had our first road map update in IRC today. Below is a list of the proposed changes. To avoid spamming the list with +1's, respond only if there is an issue with any of the proposed changes. Barring any objections the road map will be updated.

For those who have issues pending update, Arne and Daniele, if you could reply with your comments that would be much appreciated.

* 1.7.2 release date

It was decided that 2 weeks from today would be a reasonable time for release. This stretches out the approximately 1 month cycle we have been shooting for but with the holidays is understandable.

* issues pending update

The following issues belong to people who were not in IRC. If they could comment on 2 weeks being acceptable that would be great.

  - GEOS-2534: Non-cached Virtual Earth and Google Maps support through GWC (Arne)
  - GEOS-2520: Bring Imageio-ext extension to supported status (Daniele)
  - GEOS-2296: Add ECW support in the GeoServer downloads (Daniele)

* issues moved back to 1.7.3

It was decided that the following issues probably won't be doable in the two week time frame.

  - GEOS-665: ogr2ogr for new WFS output formats (Andrea)
  - GEOS-1162: Support custom raster legends via GetLegendGraphic (Simone) **

  ** Simone: We were not sure about this. The reason for pushing back was the fact that you are on vacation. Perhaps someone from GeoSolutions can comment or if Simone is checking email :).

* issues promoted to 1.7.2

The following issues are near complete and can be included in 1.7.2:

  - GEOS-2288: Add directory data store to the list of standard GeoServer data stores (Andrea)

Ah hem, a bit of confusion here. GEOS-2288 and GEOS-665 are both
dead in the water, as I did not do any work on either of them
The one that's basically complete is
- GEOS-2548 Better support for hatched fills
bacause I've worked on it during the holidays (thougth it
was fun and decided to give it a crack... turned out it
was not that hard and I basically just need to discuss
a bit the details of the contribution to gt2... or
just decide to keep it in GeoServer otherwise).

Within two weeks I can do GEOS-665 enough to make it a
extension I guess, and start working on GEOS-2288 so that
it will be good to make its entry early in the 1.7.3 release
cycle.

Cheers

Ahh... my apologies. I confused GEOS-2288 with GEOS-2548. Got it now.

Hi Justin,
I have worked on GEOS-2296 and the ECW plugin mechanism have been already tested on Windows and it’s ready to be used.
Moreover I’m working on setting up the release of the ImageIO-EXT project which includes:

  • IP review
  • Javadoc generation
  • Windows installer
  • Different Builds availability.
    This is a prerequisite to move Geotools Imageio-ext extension to supported status. (GEOS-2520)
    Actually, the guy which is collaborating with me on these tasks, is back from holidays but got the flu. He should back to work on few days and I’m waiting some feedbacks from him (He already did great part of the work).
    Anyway, the status is good (everything is almost ready) and I will give you additional feedbacks at the beginning of the week.

Regards,
Daniele

Hi Justin,

Implementing it as a write-through cache turned out to be rather difficult once I started coding it up, so it's using GeoServer's memory cache by default.

http://localhost:8080/geowebcache/service/gmaps?layers=topp:states&zoom=5&x=5&y=11&cached=false

Optionally, you can add metatiled=false

Now, does anyone have an opinion on what section of the documentation this stuff should go into ?

Thanks Arne,

So what I am getting is that this issue will be handled in the short term, and perhaps we need another issue or improvement to improve the write-through cache?

As for documentation do we have a gwc specific section of the users guide? As gwc grows in features and becomes more prevalent in GeoServer we probably need one.

Yeah, the three approaches that I have been able to come up with (simple write-through, delete tiles after reading, delete tiles in metatile on initial tile request) all have issues with metatiling. Basically you may end up getting a complete metatile from the backend for each tile that client requests. The only solution I could think of is to introduce a time limit, which is not very elegant. Will be happy to discuss if anyone is interested :slight_smile:

Will make GWC 1.0.1 for 1.7.2, so the page Mike requested for mapping GeoServer stable releases and GWC releases will be created.
