[Geoserver-devel] Should CatalogBuilder set a default SRS if none was found?

Dear developers,
a few days ago I opened GEOS-7216: WFS GetCapabilities throws NPE if published layer has no geometry.

As I mentioned in the issue description, there may be situations when a user might legitimately want to publish a geometryless layer (e.g. the GeoSciML’s GeologicEvent feature type). This thread also confirms that should be possible to do so.

Now, if one tries to publish a geometryless layer through the web UI, nothing can go wrong, as the form validation forces the user to define at least a declared SRS and a lat/lon bounding box.
However, through the REST API it is possible to mess things up and publish a layer with no SRS and no lat/lon bounding box, which results in the NPE I reported in the issue.

The simplest fix I can come up with is to set the declared SRS to a default value (EPSG:4326? EPSG:404000?) if none was found; basically this means adding an else block to this if statement in org.geoserver.catalog.CatalogBuilder:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/c8013c078da0c86b9b1e29913a75fabb7f8f9c9a/src/main/src/main/java/org/geoserver/catalog/CatalogBuilder.java#L653

This is enough to ensure that a lat/lon bbox will be computed and so the NPE will not be thrown anymore.

An alternative could be to apply the same logic not in CatalogBuilder (gs-main module), but in the REST resources handling feature types, org.geoserver.catalog.rest.FeatureTypeResource and org.geoserver.catalog.rest.DataStoreFileResource (gs-restconfig module).

Any thoughts?

Hi Andrea,
PR is here:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/1240

I guess existing tests already cover this? Otherwise, I can add a WFS-specific test.
