[Geoserver-devel] Some funny discovery about time parsing: no more than 100 times!

Hi,
today I’ve made a funny discovery about some code that was written by a certain Andrea some 7 years ago [1]…
basically, if you pass a start/end/period indication to the time parameters, and that identifies more than 100
times, the code will silently return only the first 100 in the series, logging a warning.

That thing is configurable by a system variable, but it’s hard to find, and honestly, I did not remember this at all.
I’d propose to:

  • Make it UI configurable among the service limits (having a limit is certainly good, but this hidden it’s not so useful)
  • Throw an exception when the limit is exceeded, like other service limits. And I’d consider this a bug fix, the current behavior is non discoverable.
    Objections? Suggestions?

Cheers
Andrea

Andrea,

that definitely qualifies as a bug fix. An exception is much preferred over silent truncation.

- Can the limit be made discoverable?

- Is there some kind of pagination facility that would permit the client to request chunks of no more than 100 results? Or do they have to guess time ranges based on time intervals from a sample?

Perhaps the documentation could include some guidance to clients.

Kind regards,
Ben.

You mean in the capabilities? As far as I know there is no way to do so,
the syntax for time specification is too complex

- Is there some kind of pagination facility that would permit the client
to request chunks of no more than 100 results? Or do they have to guess
time ranges based on time intervals from a sample?

The WMS specification has no facility to paginate over dimensions, although
it would certainly be nice.
The WMTS dimension extension (in unsupported) goes somewhat in that
direction allowing a client to discover the structure of the time dimension,
and then take decisions on pagination if needed. The module per se has
little that's WMTS specific and we'd like to extend it to WMS as well, time
and funding permitting

Merged on master, but was not small and required many changes, also in the

Andrea,

I agree it’s a bug fix, but the reason we differentiate is mostly about stability. Maybe leave it a bit longer than a bug-fix backport and not as long as a feature release? Where it is on the scale is subjective, and I’m sure you can make that judgement better than any of us.

that will be a good test I guess
