[Geoserver-devel] Some never should happen exception

Hi here.

I want just send somewhere one exception which I got on GeoServer 2.0-RC1. It
is included in atachement (not only last error, but some logs before,
describing my steps before exception). I am not sure If I could reproduce it,
but it could be probably get by this steps:

1. add some layer (from postgre view as data source)
2. delete view in postgre
3. do some clicks in web interface of geoserver
4. add view which has same name as deleted view
5. add new layer from that view (web UI will give some error about already
defined layer with same name, so rename it by adding some random chars at end
of name / title)
6. try to view that older (original named) layer in open layers. This will
give that error in log.

I was competing with warning "No primary key or unique index found for
view..." like in tutorial
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/PostGIS+DataStore (I was trying the
first commented solution)

PS: I found imho more bugs, but I dont want to spam jira buglist and make
duplications and I dont have time to list all bugs and search if my bug is
also described there. Could I send similar bugs here, or to irc, or nowhere?
I dont want to be bothersome.

Have a nice day.

I can't comment on this specific issue, but I would like to say that any error that says "This should never happen"...um...should never happen. I don't really know the details on how error handling works in GeoServer, so perhaps this is a way of putting a ribbon on NullPointerExceptions?

Anyway, I would much prefer (and I think others may as well) that the "This should never happen" error be changed to a bit more diplomatic:

"We're sorry, but GeoServer has encountered an error that we weren't expecting."

Sorry to hijack the thread...

P.S. Any Sierra On-Line game fans here from way back? I think my aversion to terse errors may come from years of typing things like "climb tree" or "take drink" yielding "How can you do that?" in response...

Thanks,
