Hi Andrea,
I thank you for your comments. They are much appreciated. And I can assure this is not in response in to the roadmap thread in any way. I more or less made my decision weeks before the roadmap thread even started. It has been something I have been considering for quite some time, so rest assured this was not a hasty decision.
I also want to reaffirm that I won't be stepping back any of my development efforts. If anything taking less time to do PSC oriented tasks will allow me to put more time toward bug fixing.
As for my reasons for stepping down it boils down to a number of things and I don't want to go into too much detail. But basically I have found that the general atmosphere in the development community has become too stressful for me. Conversations are more often than not argumentative rather than constructive, and riddled with cynicism. I have generally found the tone and attitudes of people negative rather than positive. Now i am by no means pointing fingers here, I know that a lot if not most of the negativity has stemmed from myself. Which is partly why I think me stepping down will be a good thing.
The other major reason is that I have felt for quite some time that OpenGeo has had an over presence on the project. With project management being an arbitrary and non-transparent process. The roadmap process was supposed to be a remedy for this but if anything i think it may have made things worse. With one less OpenGeo voice around I hope that others will have the opportunity to step up into a leadership role, making the community more diverse and sustainable.
Once again, thanks for your kind words.

Hi all,
For various reasons I have decided to step down from the GeoServer project steering committee. I do however plan to remain an active member of the development community.
The docs with regard to the process of stepping down state that if I wish I may nominate a successor:
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/0+Project+Steering+Committee
But I think there are a few people suitable for the PSC spot so I will just let the normal nomination process run its course.
Hi Justin,
it really pains me to see this mail. Can I ask you to reconsider?
GeoServer would not be as successful as it is with your contributions.
The current OWS dispatching framework, the catalog, most of the
WFS and WPS code, not to mention all the work in GeoTools with
XML handling, JDBC stores rewrite, just to name the first few
things that come to mind, are some great contributions you made.
They are not just good, they are core.
Many positive GSIP are also the result of your work.
You have shown leadership and poured a lot of work in the community,
I cannot really imagine having you outside of the PSC.
I want to apologize for the roadmap thread of a few days ago,
I just wanted to help but I came out as "I'll do it better".
It was not my intention to stomp on your feet, but to get
in place a different process and see if by changing the
specifics of it, it would work out.
Sorry for sounding offensive, it was uncalled for.
Cheers
Andrea
