Hi,
Cascading with basic auth works and usage is documented in http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/data/cascaded/wms.html
However, it may be the GetFeatureInfo request do not work with authentication.
There is also an open ticket about trouble with cascading MapServer WMS with WMS 1.3.0 and basic auth https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-6932
And then there are some known but not necessarily well defined problems with cascading layers which have non-ASCII characters in the layer names like spaces or something like åäöÅÄÖ. Also, if the remote server answers with HTTP 302 redirection then Geoserver can’t follow. There is a ticket about this: #6183, and #5868 is about the same issue with WFS.
I think that users would appreciate if at least some of the improved cascading capabilities could be used also with the integrated GWC.

Hi all,
We are starting a customer project at Spatineo with a client wishing to improve the current Geoserver cascading WMS support.
At least the following features would need to be implemented:
-
Passing extra request parameters to the backend WMS (time, elevation, cql_filter etc.)
-
Passing SLD styling parameters to the backend WMS
-
Support for requesting specific image formats
-
Support for authenticated requests to the backend WMS
Our client has indicated that they would be willing contribute the changed code back to Geoserver community, but the formal decisions are still pending.
I have not yet plunged into the code to plan the approach, and would like ask if you know of any recent or on-going efforts for reaching the same goals? My timeframe for working with these issues would probably May - October this year.
Searching the list for posts, I found the issue GEOS-6911 indicating that the basic auth support for cascading WMS was already implemented in version 2.1.3. Can you confirm this?
Any other ideas or suggestions on what I should take into account for this work at this point?
Regards,
Ilkka Rinne
