Is this method of publishing supported? Or are the only ways of publishing through the rest api and web interface?
The method seems valid. I don't know what exactly to say about "supported" though.
GeoServer is a "end user" application, often customized in various ways, but not really though to be
a library or a base application (like, we don't have a firm API control, even if we try to avoid gratuitous
changes).
As a programmer, you're supporting yourself there... and yes, the API you are using there is important, used
in many places, so it's unlikely, but not impossible, to be changed over time.
