[Geoserver-devel] Ticket default assignee in the new jira

Hi,
the new Jira server defaults to have the newly created tickets assigned to no-one.
I was planning to leave it that way, and when someone decides to pick on the ticket,
they could assign it to themselves to show work is ongoing (or is going to start soon),
in the interest of avoiding duplicate work.

What do you think?

I agree! It is realistic and what we do with internal jira.

Do not copy or disclose the contents.

-0 If a module has a contact point it should be up to them if they want issues auto-assigned.

I recognize we have fallen out of the habit of having module maintainers (gradually relying on the PSC and then Andrea for maintenance). If leaving issues unassigned helps us to feel more comfortable fixing random issues that would be great.

I could not assign contact points when setting up Jira as users had not signed up yet.

GeoServer just never had a concept of module maintainer for core modules
(not that I remember), although we have maintainers
for the extension modules (which often work pretty much like GeoTools ones
I'm sorry to say).

If someone feels responsible for a particular module and wants to quickly
solve issues being reported, and finds it handy to have the issues
assigned to themselves to quickly locate them, I'm supportive of the idea
of assigning the issue to them right away... anything to help
people that actually want to help fixing tickets :slight_smile:
I'm actually very eager to hear about any sort of idea that would push devs
to do more maintenance.

But I agree with the others that if that person does not exist, or if we
just cherry-pick tickets based on importance (rather than module), support
contracts,
whatever fits the one hour you can allocate, or whim of the moment, it's
more realistic to leave them unassigned until someone really starts working
them.
