I'm new to Geoserver so apologies if this is a stupid question but I
would like to use a GML file as the data source for queries to
geoserver. Is that possible?
When you set up a new datastore, I can see that the config menu has GML
as an option for the datastore, but the documentation doesn't mention
that at all as far as I can see.
Can anyone point me in the direction of any information (or is willing
to tell me how to) set up a GML file as a data source and send queries
to extract features from that file.

Right now our "GMLDataStore" is not in the best shape, and there is no developer working on it.

See above, however if you want to try it out it has some restrictions:
- the schema must actually exist and be correct GML2
- and so on ...

to tell me how to) set up a GML file as a data source and send queries

I am afraid I cannot offer further advice until such time as the GMLDataStore is supported.
