Thanks for weighing in opinions on this one. Even though the response was slightly more positive than negative I think i am going to take a conservative approach.
So the plan will be to only commit the changes to geoserver trunk and maintain a git repository for 2.0.x that has a branch with the changes in it for the purposes of delivering to the customer. I will write this up in more detail in a separate thread and will make this repository public so that it can be accessed by anyone who is interested.
Perhaps after the patch has seen some use and testing on trunk we can backport it to 2.0.x with more confidence.
