Can I just check that GeoServer 1.6 is planned to work with both WFS 1.0 and
WFS 1.1 clients.

Yes, 1.6 will do both wfs 1.0 and wfs 1.1. However this brings up an important issue that I think we need to address for 1.6.
Pre 1.1, GeoServer is forgiving in that it still responds to a request which does not specify a version. However now, to be OGC compliant, a service with multiple versions should return the highest version it can support if no version is specified by the client.
The upshot is that wfs clients that did not specify a version before will get wfs 1.1 responses back now. This may be something we want to allow the user to configure, as we do other things like this is the "
strict cite compliance" category.
