[Geoserver-devel] Why was the Windows Installer instruction removed from the user help

While checking the correct merge of GEOS-9384, I noticed the help on the Windows Installer was completely removed from the user documentation by Ian Turton along with the help regarding the OSX installer.

I think removing the OSX installer is not a big issue (I can’t believe there are people using OSX at all these days…).

But why was the help on the Windows Installer removed? There are plenty of users using it (event though they have to create the installer manually)…

Reply form Ian Turton:

I deleted the pages as we no longer produce the installers, feel free to add the instructions to produce an installer for windows else where in the docs, but try not to give the impression that there is an installer than people can download and use when there isn’t one.

Create issue to restore this in another way: https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/browse/GEOS-9457

I believe some text like “We cannot produce the Windows installer right now, the developer guide has instructions on how to build it”
and then link to it.

Oh they are in north america, which would make an installer for that platform pretty useful for people doing
quick tests and development before deploying on a server… but OSX build servers are rather expensive
(and we have the same issue as Windows, we need to get OSGeo certificate on it to sign the installer, so it should
be a trusted machine)

Cheers
Andrea

Ronald,

I cannot emphasis this enough, we do not have resources (time/money) and engagement from our user list (testing) to maintain a windows installer.

This is a case where open source is not a “product” and we are very much steered by participation rather than market opportunity. If your employer is interested in donating your time towards this activity it would be great, or reach out to our commercial support page for organizations with expertise to make it happen.

For some years I would always generate the macOS installer by hand. If you find many people are creating the installer manually perhaps we can recruit one of them?

aside: whatever happened to the Docker volunteers after foss4g?

Hi,

If I may ...

We are using Geoserver with windows in production environment for a few
years now (I work for a ministry so it's not a small/basement company !) and
I have to say that the installation using the .war file in a tomcat
container is the way to go : Very good performances, backups and upgrades
are easier since you just have to take a copy of a folder. You can also have
several Geoserver instances on the same machine.

I wouldn't use Geoserver on windows otherwise. No need to use windows
installer.

Thanks

I agree with you Olyser.

I find a windows installer is sometimes required to fit in with a customer’s managed windows environment policies. Where everything needs an installer that can be run headless and managed from some admin console somewhere.

I am sure the same policy could be met with a windows installer that adds the war to the tomcat webapps folder

So while I understand this requirement, I just do not have a customer with this requirement at present…

Thanks for everyones oppinion.

The idea for creating the instruction to create a Windows installer was mine in the first place. This was because we we’re running GeoServer on a Windows Server (requirement).

As I don’t have knowledge of Tomcat, this was/is the way to go for me. Also new Windows users would have a very simple ‘setup’ to get going with GeoServer on Windows.

But when most of the Windows users don’t use the installer but use TomCat with the war file, it might be a nice addition to the manual to talk about how to se tup Tomcat for use with the GeoServer war?

This way new Windows user have a low-level way of getting things going, without the need for an installer…
