Hi,
I´m using 1.3.0-RC1-WCS as war-file-installation(WCS).
Whenever I try to use the getCapabilities-Link (under My GeoServer WMS) the tomcat-server produces the following error.
It´s from 'catalina.out'. I hope jai is correctly installed. Under Welcome-Admin I get the message 'Jai is available=true'.
(I also have read that jai is not required since version 1.3.0-RC1)
The result of my response is that I get a getCapabilities-Document but the browser can not display is, because he want´s to use application/vnd.ogc.wms_xml.
Does anyone get the same error message and perhabs a solution for this problem?
I also have try to use the bin-file-installation(WCS) with same result.
Configuration
Tomcat: 5.0.28 also 4.1.29 Java: 1.4.2_06
Java(TM) Image I/O API 1.0_01

Hi Lars,
can you send the stdout.log from tomcat? I cannot see the StackTrace ...
Once you click to the link, try to save the GetCapabilities file and
open with an editor, you should see the Exception thrown from WMS.
Let me know.
Regards,
Alessio.

In fact, the stack trace wouldn't help much in this situation.
Unfortunately I forgot to cc my previous message into this list (sent
it directly to Lars), so I guess I should briefly repeat my thoughts.
I almost sure that this is not an error and is completely unrelated to
your work with GeoServer WCS, Alessio. Most probably the browser
cannot get "application/vnd.ogc.wms_xml" content-type and display it
as XML by itself. If the result of GetCapabilities request is saved
and then viewed in some text editor there should be a valid
capabilities response. Personally I avoid this little inconvenience
by changing type of the response from "application/vnd.ogc.wms_xml"
to "application/xml", as this deviation from specs is not a problem
for internal development.
As for stack traces, it is not likely to see them in the log, as this
is not a critical error, just a warning. But, in fact, exception is
being passed with this log message but Log4JFormatter ignores
throwables altogether so they don't appear in the logs. And that is
usually a good idea, as after I switched my GeoServer instance to work
with Jakarta Commons Logging - Log4j tuple I now getting _tons_ of stack
traces in Tomcat logs So I can get you fragment of my log after
execution of the similar request if you are interested but there is
not much useful info in it:

Yes, I can see that there is an error because the LegendURL is not
printed out in the GetCapabilities, but the only effect of this error
is that the LegendURL node is not attached to the response, you should
still get the GetCapabilities response without problems (I'll check
this problem as soon as possible).
About Lars' first email infact the GetCapabilities response is ok, but
using Jetty the GetMap response works fine while using Tomcat it
returns a strange error, something like "cannot connect to DISPLAY".
Maybe it depends by the Tomcat installation.

Ok, for the Legend the problem is that in GeoServer 1.3.0-RC1, the JAI
support for PNG was removed because of the introduction of a new
PNGEncoder ... so I'll solve this problem creating a
PNGLegendProducerFactory ... but again, the GetCapabilities is printed
out correctly even without the LegendURL.
