Maybe someone is interested.
I have downloaded 1.5.x source an compiled with mvn.
When testing with jetty no problems.
When trying to deploy within tomcat5 It fails.
I have to copy some data and catalog.xml from ( geoserver.war 1.5beta2 previously downloaded)
to let it works!

Don't you happen to have the stack trace?
