I still haven't gotten ArcSDE to work in 1.6RC2.
Is there anybody who can confirm this combination works for them?

I'm very sorry about the late response. Just confirmed arcsde is not working
for RC2 nor RC3, sigh.
I'm working on it right now, will upload a patched version for the just
released RC3 soon.
Excuse the inconvenience and thanks for reporting.
