Hi,
I was trying out 2.9, but it won’t start up. Is there something I need to be aware of, like a new Java requirement or something?

You are not giving us much to go on... what does not work, what's the
environment and java version?
Making guesses, you need for sure Java 8, it's now the minimum requirement.
If it's windows, it's known that RC1 won't start, should be fixed in 2.9.0
final... while not announced,
you can download it from SF already and try it out:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/geoserver/files/GeoServer/2.9.0/
Now, if you also have the native JAI installed in the JDK, then one step
that used to be
optional has become mandatory (new Jetty version, we still haven't figure
out how to setup
the classloading order to avoid it, suggestions/pull requests welcomed btw):

Yes, that was it, the JRE version. Thanks. I’d like to try out the GeoFence community module, but where do I find it? The community modules are not in the Source Forge area, and I’m not sure I should use the ones in the nightly build area (though I’ll give it a try…)

Community modules are not available in relases, but only as part of
nigthtly builds.
If you take a 2.9.x build it should work fine with 2.9.0 final (should
being the operative
word, community modules are not as tested as the released ones).

(you'll probably want the integrated version, called
