[Geoserver-users] Advanced Raster Projection switch

Hi,

First of all, I appreciate the hard work you folks, in particular at GeoSolutions, are doing, already for many years, on raster.

I noticed when upgrading from 2.4.3 to 2.6.1 that reprojected raster images from an Image Mosaic GeoTIFF source became less sharp. I tried many raster settings but to no avail. I noticed that in 2.6.2 "Advanced Raster Projection" could be switched off. Via the Java-code it appeared that this can be effected by setting ENABLE_ADVANCED_PROJECTION=false in e.g. the Tomcat environment settings. After upgrading to 2.6.2 and adding that setting, this immediately gave better/sharper results. See attached image for the differences before/after the setting. The original imagery is in EPSG:28992 and the reprojected/warped in EPSG:900913. There are no problems in rendering in the original projection, only when reprojecting/warping.

I am not sure why the above worked for me, but I thought I share this. Maybe it helps in further development. I can give more context if needed.

Best,

Hi Just,
you do have bilinear interpolation on, yes?
The issue is known, we are working on a solution, here: https://github.com/aaime/geotools/commits/warp_affine_aph

Still need to perform some checks before we merge it. The gist of it is that currently in order to handle
difficult projections we are doing first a reprojection and then a rescale to the desired target resolution,
which with bilinear interpolation result in a double resampling, the patch modifies the code paths
so that we can leverage the “warp/affine” reduction, that is, a code path that notices a reprojection
and and affine need to be performed in sequence, and merges the two in a single operation, thus
getting us a single bilinear resample

Cheers
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Thanks. Yes I have Bilinear interpolation on. Nearest N. gave far worse results. Hard to see a difference with Bicubic. Also before ENABLE_ADVANCED_PROJECTION=false Bilinear gave the best results.

Best,

Just

Ciao Simone,

No problem, the imagery (source) is open data from the Dutch OpenTopo project: http://opentopo.nl. Some GeoTIFFs at [1]:

The original TIFFs are generated from a QGIS project by the author JW van Aalst, and available for download, e.g. here [2]:

I use GDAL recipes [3]+worldfiles [4] to generate GeoTIFFs like [1]. This script [3] transforms a source dir with original tiffs to a destination dir. There may be something there that gives some issue, like extracting just 3 bands? This encoding gave good results on GeoServer 2.4.3, blurred after 2.6.1 upgrade, and ok again in 2.6.2 only after setting ENABLE_ADVANCED_PROJECTION=false.

The resulting tiff-dir gets added as an ImageMosaic source in GS.
So easiest is to use these result-TIFFs [1]. Once we are sure that the encoding is "right" we will use these as a more compressed and better geotagged download format as well. Just noticed the Paul Ramsey blog on GeoTIFF compression [5].

Best,

Just

Ciao Just,
more thoughts, in case we needed it, would you be able to share some

Ciao Just,
my experience says that in most cases Bicubic is simply slower than bilinear.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks. Yes I have Bilinear interpolation on. Nearest N. gave far worse
results. Hard to see a difference with Bicubic. Also before
ENABLE_ADVANCED_PROJECTION=false Bilinear gave the best results.

Hi Just,
you do have bilinear interpolation on, yes?
The issue is known, we are working on a solution, here:
https://github.com/aaime/geotools/commits/warp_affine_aph

Still need to perform some checks before we merge it. The gist of it is
that currently in order to handle
difficult projections we are doing first a reprojection and then a
rescale to the desired target resolution,
which with bilinear interpolation result in a double resampling, the
patch modifies the code paths
so that we can leverage the "warp/affine" reduction, that is, a code
path that notices a reprojection
and and affine need to be performed in sequence, and merges the two in a
single operation, thus
getting us a single bilinear resample

Cheers
Andrea

     Hi,

First of all, I appreciate the hard work you folks, in particular at
GeoSolutions, are doing, already for many years, on raster.

I noticed when upgrading from 2.4.3 to 2.6.1 that reprojected raster
images from an Image Mosaic GeoTIFF source became less sharp. I
tried many raster settings but to no avail. I noticed that in 2.6.2
"Advanced Raster Projection" could be switched off. Via the
Java-code it appeared that this can be effected by setting
ENABLE_ADVANCED_PROJECTION=__false in e.g. the Tomcat environment
settings. After upgrading to 2.6.2 and adding that setting, this
immediately gave better/sharper results. See attached image for the
differences before/after the setting. The original imagery is in
EPSG:28992 and the reprojected/warped in EPSG:900913. There are no
problems in rendering in the original projection, only when
     reprojecting/warping.

I am not sure why the above worked for me, but I thought I share
this. Maybe it helps in further development. I can give more context
     if needed.

     Best,
