[Geoserver-users] alphabetize layers in GetCapabilities OK to do?

I just created http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-832
Saul says he’ll do this (we would really like to have it) if people think
it’s a good idea and just no one has gotten round to it yet.

I think it is a good idea, and it shouldn't break anything, so I say go ahead and implement the sorting.

Hmm, I would certainly make this optional, I can think of a few use cases where you wouldn't want this, and you would want your own predefined sequence of layers to be advertized. Since this will also determine the sequence in WMS client GUI tools.

Best regards,
Bart

Well currently our order is pretty much random: the order in which the layers were created, I think is how it is done. Currently there is no server-side way to order the layers, it all relies on the client to request them in a particular order. And ordering the layers by render order (height I guess for a WMS client) breaks down when you are serving up for multiple maps. So I would think that alphabetizing the response shouldn't break anything because there is nothing to rely on when it comes to ordering. But who knows, it is possible something has been built off of that given order.

Now if we wanted a pre-defined sequence of layers, I think that could be useful, but a lot more work. I think temporarily just alphabetizing is a nice solution.
