Ahhh... I think i know what is going on.. The first cut of kml templates used kmlPlacemarkDesciption.ftl as the name of the template. However it was then changes to just description.ftl to be used for other formats... Try changing the name of the file and see if that helps.
Are the docs still referencing kmlPlacemarkDescription.ftl? Also I thought that both were accepted for backwards compatibility reasons... I Will have to check into that.
