It may be that geotools doesn't support those well enough. Maybe the uDiggers have some insight? I imagine there might be some more experience getting SLD to do these types of more interesting things?
It may be that the current stuff just isn't up to snuff. If we don't hear anything back from uDig guys go ahead and submit these requests to the bug tracker and we can try to take a look at them soon.
With the first, what exactly do you want to do to get it to look better? Maybe send screenshots of how things look, and how they could look nicer?
Also the: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/SLD+Snippets page is where we're hoping to get people to post what they've done. If you can get your examples up there maybe that will encourage others to add more of theirs, as we've not had a ton of contributions there yet.
best regards,

I would like to have a symbol along a line, say, little diamonds.
I create a transparent .gif _http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/images/soil_arc_bedrock.gif_
and try this:
<LineSymbolizer>
<Stroke>
<sld:GraphicStroke>
<sld:Graphic>
<sld:ExternalGraphic>
<sld:OnlineResource
xlink:href="http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/images/soil_arc_bedrock.gif"/>
<sld:Format>image/gif</sld:Format>
</sld:ExternalGraphic>
<sld:Size>16</sld:Size>
</sld:Graphic>
</sld:GraphicStroke>
</Stroke>
</LineSymbolizer>
It doesn't seem to matter whether I use a size 16 symbol with 3 little diamond, or a size 6 symbol with only 1.
The result is "OK", but not as good as ArcMap.
Any trick to getting it to look better?
I'm also having trouble creating dot line patterns - dash and dot. Real, round dots, not little squares.
I vary the stroke-linecap and stroke-linejoin values, but I don't seem to see any differences.
Does anyone have examples they can share or point me to?
Thanks!
