[Geoserver-users] ArcIMS, IMSEmu and serving ArcXML

Before I came to the GS world, I had a lot of projects using MapServer, and
some of my clients are using ESRI clients, specially ArcExplorer to access
these projects (using IMSEmu).

I'm not JAVA programmer but I wish to see GS serving ArcXML and images acting
as a ArcIMS server... What you think? With some guidance I will explore the
code to make a try...

IMSEmu is almost a dead project, but its hacks are useful to mimic ArcIMS
server behaviour. I'm not an ESRI enthusiast, but GS can add this to its big
collection of features!

That would be great if you could port their stuff to GeoServer. And indeed GeoServer 1.4.x is set up to do just this sort of thing. See: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/Home What you'll want to do is create a new plugin, see: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDEV/3+A+Simple+PlugIn

First step is to probably just try out the hello world from there. I can give you next steps after that. It probably makes sense to do the images first, and Alessio has an example in the KMZ output on making a new image. The main thing to do is get the request/response handlers right. And for ArcXML you just need to make a new output producer similar to GML I imagine.

But yes, I'm happy to help out with directing on where to look in the code, it would definitely be a very cool feature to have. And I imagine that porting code from IMSEmu would make it relatively easy.

best regards,

Chris
