[Geoserver-users] Beginners Query!

Hi

I’m still working out things within Geoserver and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a useful guide that could help me with the following:

I am wanting to display some mapping data so that when someone clicks on the map all the layers of information at that spot are returned in a table of information, basically something similar to what layer preview does, but on an externally facing website.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hi Steven,
From GeoServer’s perspective, that’s typically done with a WMS GetFeatureInfo request (though it can be a WFS).
But that’s not really of any use to you. What you need is a web-browser based client of some sort. GeoServer’s LayerPreview page uses OpenLayers. Any good client will support that feature and much much more.

This page gives you a (slightly dated) collection of 44 possible options.

Ourselves we’re using Heron-MC (built on OpenLayers, ExtJS, and GeoExt). It’s purely internal facing now (as our corporate web-gis) but in a few months it’ll be publicly facing depending on when Security get around to approving GeoServer.

Or you can simply roll your own using the OpenLayers examples:
http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/getfeatureinfo-popup.html (but that seems silly given there are litereally dozens of full-fledged clients out there)

Give me a buzz if you want to chat more about it.
Cheers,
Jonathan
