[Geoserver-users] Better understanding of how to get data into database

Hi all,

New here to GeoServer and fairly new to the GIS community itself. I have been self taught on the basics of ESRI’s ArcMap and personal geodatabases. I have a bit of data in an ESRI personal ArcSDE database that I would like to interface with geoserver. Is this possible? Even if it is, should I find a different database setup to be more friendly with the open source community>

I will still need to use ArcMap at work, but trying to learn more ways of doing things other than ESRI’s as I consider everything tools for the toolbox and try to use what is best for the current situation.

Thanks,

Robert

People use many different tools, but a large community has formed around PostgreSQL / PostGIS. I have no numbers to rove this, but my sense is that it's the most popular open-source solution for spatially-enabled RDBMS work.

Thanks Soroka. This is kind of what I was beginning to understand also. My issue here then would be how to get my data from using ArcMap over into a PostGIS database. I have my data in both an ESRI personal geodatabase and in .shp files using ArcMap.

I guess I am looking for the easy way out here because I am somewhat strapped for time right now.

The ArcSDE datastore is probably what you are looking for. Here is a
tutorial on setting it up:
