Hi Mike,
We feel your pain
and there is already a jira for this one:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-1141
Basically right now we default to the features fid if there is no label
in the sld. What we should do as you suggest is simply nothing so no
label shows up.

these are line-type features; there's no text-symbolizers in the SLD,
there's no reason for them to have labels in the KML. yet every single
feature is named subway_lines.### which results in totally unusable output.
Is there something to put in the SLD
(http://transit.frumin.net/SLD/subway_lines.sld) to suppress this?
thanks,
mike
