Finally I found some time to this.
I'm still without success 
I'm unable to install newer tomcat (now 5) bacause of my hosting service.
After clean installation of 2.3, I check thru all logs.
There are two messages, which caught my eye.
INFO: Deploying web application archive geoserver.war

INFO: validateJarFile(/usr/share/tomcat5/webapps/geoserver/WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api-2.5.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class
Seems to be only information
And then message, where starting up fails:
java.lang.RuntimeException: XPathFactory#newInstance() failed to create an XPathFactory for the default object model: http://java.sun.com/jaxp/xpath/dom with the XPathFactoryConfigurationException: javax.xml.xpath.XPathFactoryConfigurationException: No XPathFctory implementation found for the object model: http://java.sun.com/jaxp/xpath/dom
