[Geoserver-users] But what is it?

The GeoServer "What is GeoServer" and the User Manual introduction do not
state what GeoServer is used for.

What is provided is similar to stating that Apache is a web server which
provides HTML pages and it follows standards 1, 2, and 3. That is not
very informative if most people don't know what a web browser is, nor of
what use HTML is.

I'm pretty sure that I know 95% of what GeoServer is relevant to, but
you're not providing enough hints for me to know how GeoServer is relevant
to other things. I'm pretty sure GeoServer is not a map vending machine
on a street corner in Manhattan, but that's only because most vending
machines don't involve RSS.

Hmmm... Good point, and if any user can't figure out what GeoServer is from a page called 'what is geoserver' then it's obviously not good enough.

I'm not entirely sure how to improve it though (mostly because I'm too close to it so don't know how best to explain things). I can take out the standards stuff and put it at the end. Do you have any specific suggestions on how to make it better?

I mean, GeoServer is sort of nothing in isolation, it always depends on some sort of client - be it Google Maps, Google Earth, OpenLayers, NASA WorldWind, ArcGIS, uDig. It just translates existing geospatial data in to a wide variety of formats so that many clients can use the same map. And it enables shared editing of the data, on clients that support that. It can be used for any type of geospatial data - roads, sewers, weather, land use, environmental analysis, species distribution, topographic maps, sensor results, gps tracks, ect., ect. Anything that has a geospatial component it will display on many different mapping clients.

Or with your apache metaphor, are you saying there that a 'what is apache' section should explain what the world wide web is? (like if it was 1995 or something, obviously there's less need to explain it now). We could write a bit about 'the geoweb' if that's what you're suggesting?

Thanks for speaking up, I definitely want to improve the section, but will need some help.

best regards,

Chris
