[Geoserver-users] Clear tile cache overnight for specific WMTS layers?

Hi

I have several layers on a web application where the raw data is updated overnight via scripts. I have noticed that when accessing the layers by WMTS, the cache still shows the data as it was the day before.

Is there an option in Geoserver where I can tell it to remove the client / server cache at a particular time, so that when my scripts run to update my data, I can show it is up to date?

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris,
I don’t think there is a built-in way to expire tiles at a particular time of day/night,
but once your scripts are done updating the data, you could make them
call truncate or reseed on the GWC REST API:

http://geowebcache.org/docs/1.8.1/rest/seed.html

Hope this helps

Cheers

Andrea

I also see there are options for each layer for ‘Expire server cache after n seconds’ and ‘Expire client cache after n seconds’ – presumably the default value of 0 does nothing, but if I set it to 1 then the cache would only be available for 1 second, so the user will always be redrawing with a new cache which might be an option for me?

Hi Andrea

Yes that does make sense!

Would you recommend for datasets that are updated every day, perhaps it is better to serve over WMS to ensure the correct data is always displayed, or just set a value for example 3,600 to the expire options so that the cache is updated every 2 hours, but layers can be drawn up quicker?

Thanks

Dear Chris,
I would recommend truncating and reseeding (partially) over night.

The value is per tile if my memory serves is related to when the tile
is created and unless you seed a layer in advance (completely) you
have no idea when it will be truncated and this might confuse users.

You might find some higher level scripts to get you started with these
tasks here (warning GeoSolutions Blog):
