[Geoserver-users] Deficient shp-files

Hi Mika,

Don't know if this helps, but..
There's many kinds of spatial index files. .qix -files are used by Quantum GIS, .fix -files by uDig and .sbn/.sbx -files by ESRI products. The format of .sbn files is proprietary and hence cannot be implemented by other vendors.

There is a command in Quantum GIS for (re)creating the spatial index file: open the layer and go to menu Layer->Properties.
Cheers,
Jani

Hi Anrea and thanks for your time,

but I am afraid that wiping out of those files doesn't make any
difference. Also, they are geoserver specific, right? What you do with a
uDig or OpenJUMP?
My main point is that in order to use and share shp-files, you shouldn't
have to possess a proprietary software. I can fix my shapes by
"floating" them through MapInfo and mif-format, but what if didn't have
that software?

Hi Andreas,

how can you rebuild the spatial index in Geoserver? Or in other of
those software? I have no idea. Creating the spatial index in
Geoserver won't make any difference anyway. BTW, I am testing with
1.7.1.

Wipe out the .qix and .fix files.
Cheers
Andrea

Interesting. I'm not familiar with the different indexing systems on ESRI shapes. I had those .sbn/.sbx files, so the material is coming from some ESRI software? But correct me, if I'm wrong saying that in case you don't have any indexfiles, the rendering should be full in any software which reads shp-format?

thanks,

We have had situations which has only been solved by recreating the spatial index with ArcCatalog and/or copying all records to a new shapefile.
This has happened when non-ESRI softwares has created/edited the shapefile or when editing/saving the shapefile during network failures / different OS.
My guess is that the .shx file in some way can get out-of-order, but not fatally. Wikipedia has some more information.

Without a readable spatial index, any zoomin / identify operation will be slow.
