[Geoserver-users] ECW and RasterSymbolizer

Hi,
Is there any way I can get access to ECW and RasterSymbolizer. I know these
are things that people are working on, what is the state of their
development?

Thanks!
Jon

Raster symbolizer is under development and should be included in GeoServer 1.6.2.
As far as ECW is concerned, cold shower for you. Leica was very clear,
if we distribute an ECW plugin, we'll be violating their license and
thus be prosecutable, so there won't be an ECW plugin, period.

We'll make up instructions for people to build it from sources by
given Leica position I'm not so eager to do that either.

Time allowing we'll make a mrsid plugin thought (their license
seems to be more permissive, but after the surprises with ecw
I'll better contact lizardtech and make sure).

Cheers
Andrea

Good and bad news then!

Oh well, it's not the end of the world. It's a bit confusing though, how is
it ok for GDAL to support ECW convertion but not ok for GeoServer to serve
it as it is?

Out of curiosity, is there support for any other high compression raster
format in the pipeline?

Thanks!
Jon

Library vs server. It's explicitly forbidden to distribute a web serving application with the ECW libraries, since that's in direct
competition with ERMapper ImageServer, unless you pay ERMapper royalties
for it.
I believe if you're compiling GDAL with ECW support in order to use it
with MapServer and you don't own a proper server side license you're in direct violation of the ECW SDK license too (in my limited understanding, that is, I'm not a lawyer).

Yes, MrSid and JPEG 2000 (both using MrSid libraries). That is, unless
Lizardtech submarines this attempt as well...
Cheers
Andrea

Hi,

ER Mapper used to have more permissive licence, and I have understood that gdal continues to use the old SDK with old EULA. This new Leica policy makes jpeg2000 more attractive for my mind, but free jpeg2000 libraries are not very efficient. I guess that millions of valid option combinations in jpeg2000 compression make it difficult to build effective all-purpose jpeg2000 libraries. Perhaps there should be a very strict definitions about recommended jpeg2000 compression options to be used with most common types of geospatial imagegy (paletted, greyscale and 3-channel 24-bit) and then corresponding free, highly optimised libraries for handling those jpeg2000 variants with flaming speed? Ecw is a good example of this, actually no options at all, but if works very well.
