[Geoserver-users] Feature Types Disappeared

This is exceptionally odd and I hope someone get help me out here. I was
working in GeoServer on my local dev machine for the first time in probably
a month. In fact, the only thing I was doing was experimenting with
creating description.ftl files. One minute everything in GeoServer was
working great, the next thing I know all my feature types were gone

When I investigated further, here’s what I discovered:

1. Every single subdirectory in my Feature Types directory had disappeared
accept for the .bak folders.

2. None of my styles were available in GeoServer . However, they are still
in the Styles directory

3. As would be expected, given the other issues, everything in my Previews
window is gone

Anyone have any idea of how this happened?

Hi Todd,

Unfortunately this issue has popped up before with some users but the cause has been very elusive. It happens at random and noone seems able to reproduce it.

Do you know what you were doing at the moment you discovered that all your feature types disappeared? Were you loading, saving, or applying configuration? Or only playing with templates? Any chance you can reproduce the problem?

Hi Justin,

Well, I hope not to reproduce this problem! (Just joking, of course).

I don't know exactly when it broke. Here is what I was doing around the
time it broke, though.

I was working with templates and comparing results from my Dev server and
our production server. In both instances, I was just using the Demo
features in GeoServer to view the layer in Google Earth.

Even though I had loaded data on both servers from the same source (and both
reside in different instances of postgreSQL/PostGIS), the template had a
different "primary field" (for lack of a better word) on the two different
servers (e.g. one of the templates displayed the feature name at the top of
the information window for the feature in GE, while the other displayed the
feature ID). To get to the bottom of this (or so I hoped), I went into edit
Feature Type for this particular layer to see if there was any setting in
there that was different between the two. To the best of my knowledge, I
didn't change anything--if I did, it was on accident. Sometime soon after,
I noticed the problem.

Thanks,

Todd Fagin

If you still have it around, can you please go to the data directory
of that GeoServer and send us, compressed, the full contents of
logs/geoserver.log? I hope to find the cause in there.

Cheers

Hi to every one,

I know what I was doing when exactly the same problem happen: nothing. I
mean: geoserver output me a message where it was said the the server was out
of memory and puffff, all the feature types in bak. The question is how to
restore them?

Rename the .bak files into their original names.

If you're running the latest 1.7.3 release and can still reproduce an
OOM, considering adding the -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError parameter
to the JVM so that a full heap dump will be generated on OOM,
and then zip and send up the generated .jprof file.
