[Geoserver-users] Formats supported in the GeoServer GDAL extension?

Hi. I'm playing with the GDAL extension (and rewriting the documentation for using it), and I'm curious to get a list of which formats are specifically supported and which ones are not (whether because of licensing issues or otherwise). I'm not very familiar with GDAL, so please feel free to go into as much detail as you can!

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

Are you talking about the raster formats which come with the gdal extensions... or the vector extension recently written by Andrea?

Hi Justin. Good question. I think I'm talking about the raster formats only. Basically, whatever is added by successful configuration of this:

Thanks,

Hi Mike,
sorry for the late reply.
The Geotools ImageIO-Ext module wiki is available at 1 and I’m updating the Geotools User Guide about the ImageIO-Ext GDAL Plugin at 2.

In 2, the section “Supported Formats - (Available Geotools Readers)” depicts all the actually supported formats for GeoTools and then, GeoServer.
Note that these geotools readers are based on the ImageIO-Ext project which works on the underlying GDAL library build. Therefore a specific GeoTools reader will work (will support a format a specific format) only if the underlying GDAL library has been built with support for that format. In such a context, we have provided some ready to use binary builds at 3 (See “Release Information” for more info about the available versions).

Some notes on specific formats:
-JP2KAK:
As you will notice, JP2 Kakadu is listed as a supported format. This means that the GeoTools imageio-ext-gdal plugin has code to handle JP2 via the GDAL driver based on the Kakadu library. However due to licensing issues, we haven’t released any GDAL build containing support for Kakadu. We have setup a guide (4) containing information about how to build GDAL against the Kakadu library.

-ECW/JP2ECW:
Any user which needs to support ECW and JP2ECW support have to agree with the ECW EULA. Moreover to use ECW/JP2ECW in a server you NEED to pay a licensing fee to ERDAS.

All the other listed formats are actually supported:

  • DTED Elevation Raster
  • ESRI .hdr labelled
  • Erdas Imagine Images
  • NITF: National Imagery Transmission Format
  • MrSID: Multi-resolution Seamless Image Database
  • MrSID JPEG2000
    Hope this helps.

Regards,
Daniele
