Hi list,
I have experienced a problem using Geoserver 1.4.0 RC3 with Data Directory (http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/GeoServer+Data+Directory).
It was working with Geoserver 1.3.0 and 1.3.4, but now it seems like Geoserver can't see my SLD files, whereas it can still see my data features.
Looking at the catalog.xml file, I've found this:
<!--
Defines the style ids to be used by the wms. The files must be
contained in geoserver/misc/wms/styles. We're working on finding
a better place for them, but for now that's where you must put them
if you want them on the server.
-->
Does it means that I can't store my SLD files in the Data Directory anymore?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Eduardo

Eduardo, thanks for the notification... in fact I'm experiencing
troubles with external data directories me too.
We'll try to solve these before releasing 1.4.0rc4.
I've opened an issue about usage of external data dir:

Hi Eduardo
How are you specifying your data directory? Are you using an environment variable or specifying it in the web.xml file?
If you are using an environment variable, GeoServer will use that instead of anything specified in the web.xml file.
I only ask because I cannot replicate the bug yet.

We should figure out if that line in catalog.xml is still true...
Does anyone know? In my uses it didn't seem like they needed to be in /misc/wms/styles... If it's not we should remove that line from catalog.xml.

The styles don't have to live there. They work fine under the regular data_dir/styles directory.
I already removed the line from the file and committed the change on both 1.4 and trunk. It's just a really old comment I think.

Brent, did you upgrade before? You shouldn't be able to after my
patches.
Otherwise I do suspect you can duplicate it by using the /data subfolder
style of external data dir (not sure thought, I haven't tried).
Cheers
Andrea
I updated just before I made the change, so it should all be good.

Hi Brent,
I am specifying it in the web.xml file:
<context-param>
<param-name>GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR</param-name>
<param-value>/home/sigame/gs-conf</param-value>
</context-param>
I'm not using an environment variable, and although Geoserver don't see my SLD files, it sees my feature types, so I guess it is a SLD specific issue.
Cheers,
Eduardo

Andrea,
Sorry for the late response.
I have tried it out and the problem is still there.
After activating the "Write Logs to File" option, there was no log file at all.
I am sending you a part of my catalina.out file.
Thanks,

Can you send me your data directory as well in a zipped file over

Unfortunately I guess this won't make it for 1.4.0, but maybe I can
find a workaround for you.

Ok, I've had a look at the data dir you sent me and discovered that catalog.xml, for some strange reason, is totally lacking the styles declarations, no wonder they do not work. Did you hand modify that file,
or took it from another data directory?
The file you sent me had:
<styles>
<!--
Some xml comment inside, but no styles
-->
</styles>
Whilst a fixed one should have:
<styles>
<style filename = "3wt_region.sld" id = "3wt_region" />
<style filename = "3wt_cities.sld" id = "3wt_cities" />
<!-- list all other sld files here -->
</styles>
Once you've fixed that you should be fine.
Let me know how it goes.
Cheers

Hi Andrea,
I haven't hand modified that file.
I have already experienced this before... somehow Geoserver (1.4.0 RC3 and http://geo.openplans.org/aaime/geoserver.war) erases the SLD files list while loading.
To reproduce this behavior, try to hand modify catalog.xml putting some styles, and then reload Geoserver.
Cheers,
Eduardo
Hi list,
Just to let you know that I solved my problem.
(Thanks Andrea).
The cause was somehow related to the reported bug (http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-801).
Please correct me if I am wrong:
- In Geoserver 1.3.0, featureTypes and styles used to be in the geoserver/data directory.
- In Geoserver 1.4.0, featureTypes and styles must be in the geoserver/styles directory.
My data dir was created when I was using Geoserver 1.3.0. Now, using Geoserver 1.4.0, I had to move my styles directory one level up (from geoserver/data/styles to geoserver/styles).
Now I have something similar to this:
gs-conf/catalog.xml
gs-conf/services.xml
gs-conf/demo/
gs-conf/featureTypes/
gs-conf/plugIns/
gs-conf/styles/
gs-conf/validation/
If I am right, I think that the wiki page "http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/GeoServer+Data+Directory" should be changed to avoid other people becoming confused.
Best Regards,
Eduardo
Looking back at my 1.3 installations the styles directory was directly under the data directory:
geoserver/data_dir/styles
GeoServer 1.4.0-RC4 is back to the same way as 1.3 had it.

As quoted from Brent Owens <brentowens@anonymised.com>:
Looking back at my 1.3 installations the styles directory was directly
under the data directory:
geoserver/data_dir/styles
GeoServer 1.4.0-RC4 is back to the same way as 1.3 had it.
Right ... to avoid all this mayhem I have all directories as a direct
subdir of the GeoServer data directory and keep a symlink called "data"
pointing to "." so it works with whichever flavour seems to be current.
