The latest and greatest version of GeoServer (version 1.6.4) has been released. While primarily a bugfix release, there are some notable improvements:
* Better default formatting of KML output
* Improved and updated Windows installer
* Support for Freemarker templates for coverage layers
Also, this version contains better support for the GeoWebCache plugin (no more editing of the web.xml file).
Thanks to everyone who helped out with development! Check out 1.6.4 at:

Did the demo data layers get removed from the release intentionally? I have downloaded both geoserver-1.6.4-bin.zip and geoserver-1.6.4-war.zip and the usual sample layers were not included.
Cheers,
Ryan
Hi Ryan. Thanks for catching that. That is most definitely a bug. It should be fixed momentarily. I'll send an update...
Thanks,
Mike

Please download version 1.6.4 again. There appears to have been a bug in the release process, but the new files hosted on SourceForge should be fixed. Please let me know if you encounter any problems, and thanks again for reporting that issue.
