i need to get a GeoServer 1.6.4b working with a PostgreSQL 7.4 (and
PostGIS of unknown version at this stage) on a RedHat Enterprise Linux
R4. is anybody aware of any incompatibility/problem with such a
combination?

Hi Raif,
no incompatibility that I know of.
Are you really tied to 1.6.4b? note the 1.6 series is deprecated and unsupported now. Could you switch to the latest 1.7 release (1.7.4 is coming out, if not already there, these days).

unfortunately yes for a little while longer. the reason is that a
GeoServer version/release is part of a larger combo that has to be
tested and released as such. the next release of that combo is planned
to use the latest GeoServer 1.7 stable.
