I tested the latest nightly built (geoserver-1.5.x-080107.war) and the kml-Output is correct 
And then I just found a misconfiguration in my GeoServer-1.6 setup, so that the external Graphic is picking up correctly from SLD in this version too.
But it seems, that the GeoServer-1.6beta beyond ignores my template . . .

Actually I was looking for information if there were any changes using KmlPlacemarks in GeoServer 1.6,
because the same template from older version 1.5.1 does'nt work .
Further I noticed that in Kml-Output the GeoServer does'nt use the correct SLD for Point Stylings.

Hmmm.... can you test out the latest geoserver 1.5.2 nightly
from here: http://geo.openplans.org/nightly/1.5.x/
and tell me if that one works? I'm worried because I'm about to cur
Geoserver 1.5.2 final.

Have you tried a recent nightly too? http://geo.openplans.org/nightly/trunk/
Btw, where are you putting your template files?

I am not 100% sure but I think templates may have been added post beta1.. trying to sift through the logs to find out for sure...
