Today I made an update from a successfully running version 2.3.2 to the new one 2.4.1.
I installed GeoServer 2.4.1 with the Windows Installer.
OS Win7 x64
Oracle/Java SE 7u45 (Build 1.7.0_45-b18)
Now, GeoServer isn’t running.
The following error message shows during an attempt to open geoserver url…
“HTTP ERROR: 404 NOT_FOUND RequestURI=/geoserver”
Note: I have restared the Start/Stop several times & also restarted the PC.
HTTP ERROR: 404
NOT_FOUND
RequestURI=/geoserver/
The Java RE update from jre-7u25-windows-x64 to jre-7u45-windows-x64
There is no GeoServer entry in windows Control Panel → Administrative → Services.
There is no log file in the GeoServer installation folder.
You can find the report from GeoServer start in the attachment.
Can anybody help me?
Thank you for your support.
Best regards,
you have installed in the 32-bit windows 'Program Files(x86))' directory.
Never, ever do that with Geoserver and Windows7 or 8.
Please uninstall and reinstall somewhere else as the permits to write in the
program directory are somewhat restricted. With these versions Windows has
matured to a proper operating system, i.e. security is taken a bit more
seriously.
And, if you read the messages this is exactly what Geoserver complains
about: I cannot write logfiles, I cannot use the temp directory etc.,
because they are all in the program directory.
Yes, you can change that, but I recommend against it and think a separate
directory is better.
The 404 error means it hasn't even started. The webserver (jetty) yes, but
the program (geoserver) not.
Cheers
Christian

I installed GeoServer 2.4.1 in the recommended ‘Program files’ folder (not in 32-bit windows ‘Program Files(x86))’ directory) as you adviced.
And I chose ‘Install as a service’ with Java 4u45 x64. GeoServer 2.4 works fine.
(I’m used to ‘Run manually’ because of the warning ‘Requires a 32bit JRE.’)
Thanks a lot for your advice!
