I saw some posts reporting that this had been resolved at 2.6.x but I am still seeing it at 2.7.2
Seems to be consistent on GWC KML endpoints:
https:///geoserver/gwc/service/kml/.png.kml
Server sets a response header: Content-Disposition:“inline; filename=geoserver-dispatch.application”

Hi,
I guess the GWC integration is not setting nice file names, leaving the default
one to be used. Wondering, are you actually seeing the file names used? Google Earth should not care.
You can open a ticket for getting that improved if you want, but I would not hold my breath
on having that fixed anytime soon (unless the usual process for new features/improvements
is followed: https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/Successfully-requesting-and-integrating-new-features-and-improvements-in-GeoServer )

In Chrome and FF the file will actually download with this name, yes.
In GE client, you won’t notice any difference. But we must provide our users with a pre built KML file with the network links embedded in them, otherwise they get confused trying to grab it directly from the server.
