[Geoserver-users] [Geoserver-devel] Geo Server - WMC

This is probably a question for the user list Angel, geoserver-devel is focused for the developers working on the GeoServer codebase.

I think you have the wrong idea about the web map context is a client standard. The idea being that you can create a map in one client, export out a “context” file describing what is on screen, and then load it up in another client for the same visual.

The web map context recently got a lot easier to use, they threw out their work and made a combination of atom+ogc request. It is not great as now clients have to “parse” the requests to figure out what WFS, WMS, WCS content is involved etc… but it is clear from an interoperability standpoint.

Reference points:

  • GeoServer has a map data structure that as far as I know is not used, we could use it to maintain a list of context documents for use in client applications but have not done so at this time
  • I know that deegree had “hijacked” an earlier version of the context specification to try and use it as configuration files for their portal. In this case their “portal” was acting as a client and assembling a web client based on the provided description.

TLDR: GeoServer operates as a server, web map context is a standard for clients

Hi everybody,

I am starting to work with Geoserver and I need use the service Web Map Context which it is not support by Geoserver.

Does somebody know if I can modify geoserver in order to use Web Map Context services?

Thanks in advanced.
