I have not had a chance to look as I am at the foss4g conference (as are many of the other developers) so I only have intermittent Internet access on my phone.
You should raise a bug ticket and if this is an urgent issue then contact one of the commercial support providers listed on the geoserver website.

Did you find time to have a look?
I invested a lot of time in this already, to try to debug it, but my
debugging skills into Geotools is not enough to find out where exactly
it goes wrong.I will also try to find some other set of (time related) asc files, to
see if those work. If you have an idea of such (small dataset), please
