Hi list and specially excel-plugin users,
there seems to be version poi-3.2-FINAL.jar in download packages geoserver-2.3-beta1-excel-plugin.zip (and in few earlier versions like stable 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 as well) that is not including all needed java classes that developers have used.
So above versions of Geoserver doesn’t start up with excel-plugin installed if loaded from ‘Download’ links from Geoserver web site.
After changing to poi-3.5-FINAL.jar (folder …geoserverWEB-INF\lib) geoserver starts normally with installed excel-plugin.
poi-3.5-FINAL.jar worked for me, downloaded from:
http://www.findjar.com/jar/org/apache/poi/poi/3.5-FINAL/poi-3.5-FINAL.jar.html

http://poi.apache.org/download.html
one can try with newer versions if those will work as well.

Yes, confirmed. Here is a bug report for it with a (at the moment) incomplete patch to fix it:
