[Geoserver-users] GeoServer JAI

Hi,

i’m trying to optimize my GeoServer for a production environment like shown in the documentation. Actually i’m wondering if the installation of JAI and imageIO is still necessary and brings some performance? As the latest version is from 2006 (http://download.java.net/media/jai/builds/release/1_1_3/).
Can anyone tell me which improvements i get with the installation? I’m running Geoserver 2.3 on a Ubunutu 12.04 LTS Server.

Thanks
Christian

Hi Christian,
I believe they do still offer a speed-up, but yes, they’ve not been updated in a while. I believe they’re considered “mature”.

Their non-developed nature is more a problem for 64bit windows users, as there are none compiled for that. Nix does have that though. There are other threads (and possibly blog posts) discussing the speedup observed.

Faster PNG encoding (on all type of maps) and faster operations on raster
inputs.
If you have a GeoServer that's bogged down by trying to fetch and/or paint
too much vector data these
won't help.

Anyways, as we keep on repeating, the first thing to optimize is the data,
the other tunings normally
provide a benefit only once the data is properly setup:
