[Geoserver-users] Geoserver Newbie

Hi,

Apologies for sounding like a beginner (which I am!)...

I currently have an ARC GIS project with many layers and associated
shapefiles. I am trying to find a way of serving the project across the
internet using a web browser for anyone to view and query the data. I
suspect Geoserver is the ideal way to do this but I have very limited
knowledge on it. Can anyone suggest how I put my ARC GIS project into
Geoserver. I suspect it is not that easy and likely that the symbology in
the layers will not carry across.

Please could someone advise.

Many thanks!

Unfortunately there is no way to easily transform to a geoserver configuration. If you have some scripting skills, you could write a custom script that parsed out the arcgis configuration and transformed it to a geoserver configuration via some REST calls.

And indeed symbology will be the difficult part, mapping it to SLD which is what GeoServer uses for symboligy. I know folks have written code to do this but I am not sure anything that emerged as a robust tool for doing so.
