My intention was to help you by reporting a bug that you might not be aware of, and I?ve already gone out of my way to do that. I didn?t really want to make a ton of accounts or listen to a guilt trip. I am hardworking and busy too, the hostility is uncalled for and not any way that is going to earn support for yourself or this project.

Good day.

It?s not a demand, just would be nice if someone stuck it on the list to look at at some point. Not sure why it is so difficult to make a suggestion/report a bug on this project?

Reporting a bug is actually relatively easy, just go here: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS

The main issue is getting the ticket resolved, and that might become in fact hard if you cannot solve it yourself.
There are basically two avenues. I'd say 90% of the work is done on paid contracts, and core developers are working full time on those (it's up to 9 hours a day for me).
And then there is the spare time, which is maybe 4 hours during the weekend (again, for me), where "everything else" gets addressed, by priority and/or sometimes just because one likes to do a certain thing and not another one

First order of priority is reviewing pull requests, in order to keep contributions coming from non core devs flowing... that alone uses a lot of those 4 hours.
And then there is everything else, that is, all the open tickets in jira... and one ends up working on those that can fit the remaining time (e..g, easy ones, possibly affecting a lot of people).

And sometimes you really just want to work on something, like when I decided to put back some life in the css support. I started July 2014, using half of my seaside vacations, and continued working on it on and off until Christmas, where it used another half of my winter vacations, and then madly over then next few weekends, in order to complete it by the feature freeze (Jan 18 2015).

So.. imagine how hard it must be to hear users complaints when you basically are throwing all the time you have on the project, and yet it's never enough.....
but it's a given that one cannot make everybody happy, and I've learned to live with it

Cheers
Andrea

************************************************

Hi Ben,

On the start page http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS#selectedTab=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.project%3Asummary-panel, read the summary:

To create a new issue you must be logged in. If you do not have a login then create one at xircles.codehaus.org, then come back here and log-in. Once you are logged in there should be a link at the top of the page to 'CREATE NEW ISSUE'. You will also be able to comment on and watch individual issues.

So, go to http://xircles.codehaus.org/signup/ first.

Creating a Jira is a good thing and at least after making your first one not difficult at all.

Ben,

the wfs.xml reordering problem you describe has annoyed me since I started using GeoServer. Please create a Jira issue to try to gather support to fix it. You never know your luck.

Codehaus have not changed the Jira boilerplate. On their homepage they have given the correct instructions:
http://jira.codehaus.org/secure/Dashboard.jspa
"Sign-up for a JIRA account
You will need to create an account in Xircles - https://xircles.codehaus.org/signup/ - this became necessary to combat spammers who had automated JIRA signups."

Please also see the large red box on our communications page (note the link to Xircles):
http://geoserver.org/comm/
"To report an issue (or to follow an existing one) you’ll need to create an account first <https://xircles.codehaus.org/>\. As GeoServer is open source, everyone is encouraged to fix bugs and submit patches. Even if you are not a core developer, we welcome patches contributed through GitHub pull requests, or attached to a JIRA issue. GeoTools has provided step-by-step instructions for signing up and reporting an issue."

Kind regards,

Hi Ben, see other Ben (C-D, next response)

Please regard the bigger picture: GeoServer is an Open Source project. Nothing is perfect, but GeoServer's overall quality meets most users' expectations. Unfortunately these users remain quiet, why should they? GeoServer works for them. What we discuss here are the "imperfections" and enhancements in order to strive for even more quality.

People like Andrea do their best to answer a zillion questions, many posed without specific context, like "GeoServer doesn't work" in their spare/unpaid time.

We are all in this together to make GeoServer a better product.
This also requires effort from users, like learning a maybe unfamiliar ticketing system or GitHub. That may be hard. Paid support from companies like GeoSolutions is another option. In the end it boils down to being an Open Source Citizen, greatly worded by Paul Ramsey: http://blog.cleverelephant.ca/2013/10/being-open-source-citizen.html

My 2cts,

best,

Just

I've wasted enough time on this.

Cheers
Andrea

Ciao Ben,
please, don’t give up just yet
We need the kind of feedback you provided and the best thing a user can do is to report it with meaningful tickets.

I know the whole JIRA thing is a bit cumbersome at first but it gets extremely handy qute quickly while it is also very good for devs since they can get detailed descriptions with test data and so on.
Please, follow ben caradoc davies’ directions and you’ll get there.

I know sometimes interacting with devs from open source communities is challenging but with a bit of patience you can usually get a ton of help and information out of it.
People in this arena tend to be very sensitive about their creatures
