Is this layer grouping option in the SLD file? The WMS path grouping option? Or the 'Base map layer'
I haven't played with the WCS side of GeoServer much yet so I'm not quite sure if it is an issue or intentional.
If it is the MWS path option that you are using I think that it just groups the layers for the capabilities request. If you are using the base map layer option I think then it might be a bug.
So currently, if you use MapPane1 it works, but it doesn't work for MapPane2? I haven't used MapPane2 so I can't dig into what the issue there is.
