[Geoserver-users] GeoServer WMS/WMTS more than one tile in request

Hi,

I am using GeoServer version 2.5.2. I am trying to use integrated GeoWebCache through direct integration option.

I have grouped layer consisting of many vector layers. I have turned on tiling for this layer, and I have turned on ‘Enable direct integration with GeoServer WMS’ in Caching Defaults. When I try gwc demo it works fine; tiles are beeing created and used. Also seeding works fine.

What I want is to use tiles through WMS.

So - if I send WMS request with bounding box, width, and height that matches exactly one tile, this tile is used - in header I get geowebcache-cache-result: HIT.

If I try WMS request that would stick together more than one tile, tiles are not used.

Eg.

bbox=15.46875,43.59375,16.875,45.0&width=256&height=256&tiled=true → geowebcache-cache-result: HIT (matches exactly one tile)

bbox=15.46875,43.59375,16.875,45.0&width=1024&height=1024&tiled=true → geowebcache-cache-result: MISS

I was expecting that second request would use smaller tiles, stick them togehter, and serve as one map.

  • Is it meant for WMS (or WMTS) functionality to use more than one tile per request, and stick tham in one map, or is sticking tiles togehter done on the client?

  • Is this functionality maybe available in latter versions of GS/GWC?

  • Or am I doing something wrong?

Cheers

You are doing nothing wrong, it's just that GWC does not support building a
tile out of cached
tiles assembling multiple pre-cached layers.
It could be implemented if you are interested, this document shows the
options and process:

Hi Dragan,
no, that functionality only provides a single layer WMS service out of cached
tiles. It only merges single layer tiles to answer a generic WMS request, not aligned
to the tile grid

Maybe I did put my question wrong. I actually want to use cache tiles of one layer, just that it is a grouped layer.

I do not want to use tiles of more than one layers.

From your latest answer it seems that fullWMS option is what I want, and I would try it, but do not know how to configure it. Documentation about this is bit tricky.

I am using GS 2.5.2, and GWC 1.5.3.

I found for GWC 1.5.1 this
geowebcache-wmsservice-context.xml

TRUE

But I do not find any geowebcache-wmsservice-context.xml file on my system

And for newer GWC it seems that it should be configured like this:

/data/gwc/geowebcache.xml

true

What do you think - which one should I go for?

Oh, yes, if you have a layer group configured in GeoServer, then it will
have its own set of tiles, built from internal
WMS requests (even in that case, we don't combine tiles from the layers
that make part of the group).
And if you enable fullwms, then you will be able to get generic GetMap
running off the tiles making up the
group.

I do not want to use tiles of more than one layers.

And for newer GWC it seems that it should be configured like this:

/data/gwc/geowebcache.xml

  <fullWMS>true</fullWMS>

</gwcConfiguration>

What do you think - which one should I go for?

Err... I don't know off the top of my head, but I'm sure fullwms support
generated rather ugly outputs
back then, it got improved only recently (in GeoServer 2.7.x I believe)
