I have been using GeoServer for raster data with both Tomcat 6.x and
5.x for a while now, therefore your error seems a bit odd to me. I am
going to be away for the next couple of days therefore I am cc'ing two
colleagues of mine so that they could try to help you out a bit.

I am happy to take this off-thread if it's more appropriate but I seek
guidance from folk more experienced that me in configuring web
coverage services in Geoserver 1.7.2
Specifically: how to get past error messages of the type "Could not
read file: C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat
6.0\webapps\geoserver\data\coverages\tz-insitu. Perhaps it has wrong
permissions or is corrupted?" every time I try to create a coverage
store.
I have been hacking at this form weeks, both in WinXP and linux
environments, trying various types of data sources but mostly ESRI
GRIDs and geoTIFFS, and trying both the installer version of Geoserver
and the WAR version, to no avail.
